Potts was born on October 13, 1987. His place of birth is Abilene, Texas. His height is 6ft and 5”. His weight is 218 pounds. His family includes his parents, Avery and Cathy Potts, and an older brother, Bryan.
Potts used to participate in baseball, basketball and football in high school. His hobbies include hunting, fishing and most sports. His major is pre-physical therapy.
Professionally he is an American college football player who is a quarterback for the Texas Tech Raiders football team. His number in the Techs is 15.
Before joining the Techs, he used to play at Abilene High School. In his senior season, Potts threw for 3162 yards and 53 touchdowns and gamered Class 5A Region and All-State teams.

High school career
Prior to coming to Texas Tech, Potts played at Abilene High School in Abilene, Texas. In his senior season, Potts threw for 3,162 yards and 53 touchdowns and garnered Class 5A Region and All-State teams.[3] In addition to Texas Tech, Potts was recruited by Michigan, Baylor, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Texas, and Texas A&M.[1]
College career
Potts spent his freshman season as a member of the scout team.[1] He then served as a backup to Graham Harrell for the 2007 and 2008 seasons, compiling 669 yards passing, 5 touchdowns, and 2 interceptions.[4]
After completing 36-of-57 passes for 456 yards and seven touchdowns in the 55–10 win over Rice on Saturday, September 12, 2009, Potts was named the Big 12 Conference Offensive Player of the Week.[5] The Rice game marked his second start at quarterback and the second game in a row in which he threw for over 400 yards.
